Celebrating Haitian flag day 2026 in a classical mood

The Haitian Flag Day Celebration Committee (HFDCC) is proud to present its second annual concert of Haitian classical music.
Professor Emeritus Claude Dauphin will present an overview of the state of Haitian classical music from past to present.
Claude Dauphin, musicologist and ethnomusicologist who studied for his Phd at Lizst Academy of University of Budapest in Hungary from 1984 to 1987, is a Professor Emeritus teaching currently at University of Quebec in Montreal. He has published several books—
Musique du vaudou, functions, structures et styles / Voodoo Music, its role, structures and styles (Sherbrooke, Naaman, 1986)
Rousseau, Musicien des Lumières / Rousseau, Musician of the Lights (Montreal, Courteau, 1992)
La musique au temps des Encyclopédistes / Music during the period of the Encyclopedists (Ferney-Voltaire, CIEDS, 2001)
He has signed, in 2004, the article on “Les grandes methods pédagogiques du XXème siècle / the 20th century great teaching methods”, an insert from the 2nd book of Musique: une Encyclopédie pour le 20ème siècle / Music: an Encyclopedy for the 20th century by J.J. Nattiez.
Two editions of “Dictionnaire de musique de Rousseau / Dictionnary of Rousseau’s Music have been written from his works on the musical terminology of the 17th century
His last book “Le style musical d’Haiti / The musical style of Haiti”(Mémoire d’Encrier, 2014) was well received around the world.
He co-founded in 1975 the “Société de Recherche et de Diffusion de la musique haïtienne / Haitian Music Broadcast and Research Society) whose mission is to preserve and promote the works of Haitian and Caribbean classical composers past and present.
Several pieces of notorious Haitian composers such as Werner Jaëgerhuber, Ludovic Lamothe, Edmond Saintonge, Emile Desamours, Daniel Bernard Roumain and Gifrants will be performed by string quartet of
Crossing Borders Music
Crossing Borders Music is a multicultural organization of color that shares the stories and music of those whose voices are suppressed because of race, ethnicity, disability, gender, sexual orientation, other identity, or related trauma. We do this through free, accessible performances in community spaces in service and affirmation of our communities and collaborators. The mission of Crossing Borders Music is to use music to promote the dignity of people from all cultures.
CBM has recorded several albums of classical music written by the Haitian composer Gifrants, performed compositions of several other Haitian composers such as Werner Jaëgerhuber, Julio Racine, Jean Rudy Perrault, Michel Morton, Sabrina Jean-Louis.
and Christian Verfenstein
Christian Verfenstein began to play the piano at the age of six, and has studied with several professors, including Norman Krieger at the Jacobs School of Music and Julian Martin at the Julliard Pre-College. He has won numerous prizes, including First Prize in the Alexander & Buono International Piano Competition, First Prize in the North Shore Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. Christian has also studied the organ under the tutelage of Matthew Koraus
and has performed in famous venues such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.
Recently, Christian completed the Master of Music degree at the Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Norman Krieger, learned and performed the Ives Concord Sonata with J. Peter Burkholder and Jeremy Denk, and worked as an Associate Instructor, which included teaching piano lessons to non-music majors, Christian is now pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York city, where he studies with Jeffrey Biegel.
